Global land cover

Map adapted from the global land cover classification developed by the University of Maryland. The Maryland classification includes 13 classes and was based on AVHRR remote sensing data with a spatial resolution of 1km. For presentation purposes the data have here been generalised to a 4 km grid. Also for clarity, the two needleleaf forest classes in the original classification have been combined, as well as the two broadleaf forest classes, and the urban and built-up category has been omitted.
